Job Description: Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)
 
The position is normally based out of our Clarkson office in Mississauga, ON.

The successful candidate may be required to use their personal equipment for remote work purposes.
 
Due to the IESO's role in the energy sector, please note that a full security check will be conducted.  Job offers will be conditional until you have successfully attained security clearance to work at the IESO.

Who we are
 
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province's power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province's electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario's electricity needs - now and into the future.  

The opportunity

Division/Department:  Corporate Relations, Stakeholder Engagement and Innovation Division, Advanced Technology Research Section

You will be a part of a group responsible for: The Advanced Technology Research group resides within the IESO's Corporate Relations, Stakeholder Engagement and Innovation Division and has a number of responsibilities, including:
  • Internal coordination on emerging technology issues
  • Assisting the management reporting for various energy storage-related research programs including hybrid energy storage systems
  • Assisting the research and development activities related to the IESO's Ancillary Services contract portfolio for various power quality and reliability services provided to the IESO-controlled grid.
  • Assessing the operational potential of new technologies such as energy storage and distributed energy resources.
  • Conducting research and providing a technological outlook and technology summary reports
  • Data science and data analytic functions, including support of machine learning throughout all stages of the research and development lifecycle
What you'll do
  • Research and apply advanced statistical methods that may include machine learning algorithms in the energy industry
  • Analysis, preparation and management of data
  • Researching other electricity markets and their operations in jurisdictions such as PJM, ERCOT, NYISO and MISO.
  • Administering the research components of pilot projects involving various grid technologies
  • Compiling reports to support various research experiments involving energy storage facilities in live operations with the Ontario bulk electricity system.
  • Being a liaison with energy storage proponents and compiling the relevant materials to provide updates to management.
  • Assisting in performance benchmarking and validation of various emerging technologies
  • Various, ad hoc research assignments and literature surveys as needed related to emerging technologies and grid services.
This job will provide you with the following professional development:
  • Data science and related disciplines
  • An understanding of emerging technologies and their operations
  • The process involved in integrating emerging technologies into Ontario's power system
  • Research skills, data analysis and synthesis of management-level decision support information.
  • Exposure to the Ontario power system.
Job Requirements: What you need to succeed

Discipline(s) Required:  Mathematics, Computer Science and/or Electrical Engineering
  
The following knowledge is essential in order to perform the job: 
  • Experience with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with advanced Microsoft Excel functions including nested and array formulas an asset
  • Experience with databases, such as Microsoft Access and Structured Query Language (SQL) an asset
  • Experience with Tableau software an asset.
  • Experience with PI Process Book an asset
  • Matlab, Julia, R, or Python programming experience an asset
  • Experience with the following Python packages including: Pandas, NumPy and scikit-Learn an asset
  • Experience with data wrangling large datasets (i.e. >1 million rows).
  • Good foundational understanding of statistics
  • Experience with formulating optimization problems including formulating objective function, decision variables and constraints considered an asset
  • Electrical engineering knowledge an asset
  • Creativity

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga location.
