Job Description: Co-op Software Engineer at Briza

About Briza

Briza is the leading developer platform for commercial insurance. We make it easy for developers to embed insurance experiences into their platforms. By writing once to the Briza API, developers can access the many products and carriers required to create great customer experiences for small commercial insurance. Briza enables developers to quote and bind policies over API. Based in Toronto Canada, with a team that spans the US, Brazil and Europe, Briza places a heavy emphasis on working with and developing the best talent in our industry.

Your Opportunity

Product engineering teams at Briza strive to make interacting with commercial insurance products not only better but delightful. There is a large and growing constituent of developers that need API access to insurance carriers but want a single integration, not 100's; this is the value we’re creating at Briza. The way we do this is by making access to the insurance ecosystem simple for developers, and in doing so help developers bring unique value to consumers and businesses.

Briza is a Series A funded venture, with our HQ in Toronto, but with distributed team members across the globe. You can work from our modern office in Toronto, fully remote, or a combination of both.

Who you are:
You have strong foundations and an interest in building software applications, infrastructure/rails, API products or developer platforms
You have some experience or transferable skills to program in Node.js and TypeScript
You are hungry to learn: you’re comfortable with taking constructive feedback (and able to give it!), actively seeking it out to help drive your own growth
You understand the value of automated tests (unit, integration) as a means to ship quickly with confidence

What you’ll be doing:
Design, build, maintain and evolve an API product and developer platform with fellow engineers, designers and product managers
Get close to customers in order to understand their use cases
Debug issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
Improve our engineering standards, processes, monitoring and tooling

Building a Diverse, Inclusive, Distributed Team

At Briza, we believe diversity breeds excellence. We have a global workforce with team members on, or recruited from, 6 continents. At Briza, people live wherever they work best. We have an office in downtown Toronto (steps from Union Station) for those that do want to work onsite.

We also believe in four core values:
Ownership. We make durable decisions that consider the interests of Brizans, customers and shareholders
Ambition. We're rewriting an industry, so that buying business insurance is easy.
Teamwork. It takes a village.  We lean on each other's strengths to grow and succeed.
Honesty. Say what you mean and mean what you say.  We're comfortable receiving and delivering feedback.

We encourage applications from all qualified candidates around the world, including indigenous peoples, racialized people, people with disabilities, people from gender and sexually diverse communities and/or people with intersectional identities. Diversity breeds excellence.
