Overview Safran Landing Systems is the world leader in aircraft landing and braking systems. The company has partnerships with 25 airframers in civil, regional, commercial and military transport, and supports 32,000 aircraft that operate around 80,000 landings daily. Specifically at the Safran Landing System’s Toronto site in Ajax, the engineering team develops and supports the Boeing 787 program, all Bombardier programs as well as several military program operationally. SLS engineering is looking for energetic, proactive aerospace inquisitive individual that can contribute to the engineering team. General Candidate Skills and Requirements for All Positions • 3rd or 4th-year university student in Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineering or related discipline. • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Office in general • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment as well as independently • Strong verbal and written communication skills • Interest in the aeronautical industry Position 1: Methods & Tools Intern Job description Within Safran Landing Systems, there is a stress analysis software development project (“StressApps”) that requires a supporting engineering student resource. This project is an excellent opportunity for any engineering student looking for exposure to traditional static and fatigue analysis theory as applied in landing gear analysis. The student will mainly be involved with the testing and validation of the software. General duties include: • Understand static and fatigue theory that is being programmed • Contribute to software definition (GUI mock-up, outputs, presentation of theory to the programmers (external company)) • Test software for correctness / compare verse hand-calculations At any given time, there are about several .NET applications being programmed by an external sub-contractor. Each program is a type of static or fatigue analysis, or a utility to helps manipulate data. The student will help at various stages in the development process according to ability and experience. Job description An Engineering student position is available within the Program Chief Engineers (PCE) Office for both development and sustaining program. This position may also involve engagement with other functions of the engineering team. The project will focus on the landing gear system modeling, simulation and harmonized methods development related with some or all of the following subjects: • Landing gear shimmy modelling and analysis • Extension/retraction analysis • Shock absorber modelling and dynamics • Nose wheel steering performance • Steering runaway failure analysis • Virtual system/test rig modeling and simulation • Harmonized methods development (DSG + simulation tool etc) Specific Candidate skills & requirements • The intern will have a good sense for the design of mechanical and hydraulic equipment and a capability to validate and optimize the design by analysis (including simulation). • Some knowledge of aircraft systems would be of an advantage. • Knowledge of MatLab Simulink, ADAMS and AMESIM would be an asset Position 4: Design & Analysis Engineering Intern – Sustaining Integrated Product Team Job description Within the team and under the responsibility of the Engineering Group Leader and the Program Chief Engineer the student will support and provide valuable contributions in the following areas: • Engineering activities required to support updates and release of certification documentation for the Global G7000 aircraft in accordance with ARP-4754 requirements • Engineering Support for Production and In-Service activities and applicable documentation related to Bombardier G7000 aircraft as well as for all Bombardier legacy programs • Engineering support for Production and In-Service activities and applicable documentation related to military and commercial programs • Prepare schedule and participate in internal meetings or with customer and follow up on status with various internal departments and with customer and provide weekly status updates for multiple issues • Report creation and updates • Support drawing updates and design modification requests for landing gear components using CATIA V5 and update PLM system accordingly Position 5: Design & Analysis Engineering Intern – Development Integrated Product TeamJob descriptionWithin the team and under the responsibility of the Engineering Group Leader and the Program Chief Engineer the student will support and provide valuable contributions in the following areas: • Engineering activities required to support creation, updates and release of certification documentation for the various programs under development. • Engineering support for development activities and applicable documentation • Prepare schedule and participate in internal meetings or with customer and follow up on status with various internal departments and with customer and provide weekly status updates for multiple issues • Implement modifications to models/drawings using CATIA V5 and update PLM system accordingly Additional positions students can apply to are continued in Job Requirements. Position 6 :Systems Architecture & MBSE Overview The work assigned to the PEY Intern, Systems Architecture & Integration will be typically to support activities related to the development of landing gear system specifications and architecture definitions, to ensure all the customer and stakeholder needs are exhaustively captured and flow down to the product design (needs validation), then ensuring that the designed product is satisfying them (needs verification). Job description The main objective of the Systems Architecture process is to capture the customer and stakeholder needs comprehensively in all the product lifecycle phases and operating conditions by: - Ensuring the operational needs and constraints are complete and understood (operational contexts and use cases, nominal and degraded operational scenarios) - Taking into account external and internal design best practices and lessons learned - Structuring the product design process (functional and safety requirements, possible solutions and trade-offs, functional and performance allocation to sub-systems and equipment) - Elaborating trade-off score cards to assess the different architectures and choose the optimal technical solution (with support of all the Engineering functions involved) - Ensuring technical coherence of the product baseline - Identifying the risks and opportunities for the project (e.g. weight, performance, cost) - Running and documenting collaborative workshops with customers and/or other functions MBSE Management As the Systems Architecture tasks are realized within a domain-specific MBSE framework, the PEY Intern, Systems Architecture & Integration will also be involved in some of the following MBSE Management activities: - Manage MBSE framework in the IBM Jazz platform according to the project needs, for the Requirements, Architecture and Change and Configuration domains - Train, coach and support project teams to the MBSE process, methods and tools in the IBM Jazz platform - Write Requirements and Architecture Management Plans on the projects, capture and document MBSE best practices for the Systems Architecture and Integration community - Specify, test and validate the MBSE framework change requests and problem reports according to project needs, in liaison with the Systems Methods team Specific Candidate skills & requirements • Knowledge of Systems Engineering theory and its application on complex embedded systems Assets: • Knowledge of UML/SysML modeling languages in Rhapsody or similar tools • Knowledge of DOORS NG and other IBM Jazz platform tools (RTC, GCM, RQM, RPE) • Knowledge of modeling and simulation environments (Matlab/Simulink or similar) • Knowledge of Product Line Engineering techniques and tools (e.g. Pure Variants) Position 7: Systems Design & IntegrationJob descriptionWithin this frame, and under the responsibility of the Systems Manager or his delegate, the student will be working within an integrated product team. Duties could include a mixture of the following; • Participate on engineering teams (including design, analysis, systems, test, manufacturing, quality and other disciplines) to define landing gear system requirements and design architecture. • Collect and document Verification data for the LGS components. • Create landing gear actuation and steering system hydraulic simulation models using computerized tools. • Prepare or review systems performance analyses. • Review Test results and correlate to analysis. • Prepare test requirements for development, acceptance and qualification tests. • Participate in the preparation of failure analyses. • Review failure analyses for adequacy and completeness. • Prepare/review drawings and specifications for the electrical/hydraulic system. • Prepare system hydraulic and electrical schematics, interconnection diagrams and aircraft wiring diagrams. Specific Candidate skills & requirements • University courses should include: Control Systems, Circuit Theory, Numerical Techniques. • Knowledge of aircraft performance or aircraft stability and control an asset. • Knowledge of one of the aerospace simulation packages a definite asset. Research & Technology Intern (Optimization Team) Job description Within the Research and Technology team, the student will work as a software developer on a fast-paced team to develop a Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) software tool to aid the initial design of aircraft landing gear based on early stage aircraft configuration data. You are likely to succeed in this role if • Are an aerospace/mechanical engineering candidate with a knack for software development • You took programming courses in High School and actually enjoyed it • You prefer to write to do your lab reports in MatLab/python over Excel • You’ve been heavily involved with (or preferably led) a student team (bonus points if you’ve been working with avionics) • You’ve held a research position at your university • You’re a strong self-learner and have a proven track record of teaching yourself new skills • You have an eye for product design About us • We are developing a large scale code base using modern coding standards and practices in python • We work with design engineers and see the tools we develop used for real aircraft development programs • At the core, we are a research team – previous interns have had the opportunity to be involved and credited on publications and patents Candidate Skills • Prior experience with programming required (Python preferred, strong experience with MatLab, C/C++, Java, .net) acceptable • Experience with Agile Engineering, Git, Distributed Version Control an asset • Strong Mathematical background an asset (Optimization, numerical solvers, partial derivatives, matrix operations & differentiation) • Bonus points for experience with any of the following python frameworks: Dash, plotly, openmdao, numpy, pyopt, scipy • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced team • Strong self-teaching ability, initiative and autonomy required • Prior Research or Student Team experience an asset • Candidates should be in strong and competitive academic standing • Please include an unofficial transcript alongside resume Additional Requirements In order to apply for this role, candidates must additionally take a 1 hour coding screening to ensure that their software development capability are at an appropriate level.
