1 position: Engineering Associate (Soils and Aggregates Section)

Duration:            12 months

The Ministry of Transportation, Engineering Materials Office seeks four motivated and results oriented engineering students to assist in one of the highway infrastructure material section:
  • Soils & Aggregates  
Typical activities of these sections are:
  • Development and implementation of new innovative highway infrastructure materials and technologies (hot mix asphalt, asphalt cement, pavement, concrete, aggregates, soils, paint, system automation).
  • Laboratory and chemical testing to evaluate infrastructure materials and related product samples including standard and innovative test.
  • Assisting with field and laboratory correlations, including preparation of MTO asphalt, emulsion, concrete, and aggregates proficiency test samples.
  • Data collection and analysis of lab and field test results and performance data related to highway infrastructure materials and related initiatives.
  • Revision and/or development of test procedures and construction standards.
  • Review of test results and assistance with management of referee testing for MTO construction contracts.
  • Assistance with preparation of technical reports and presentations.
Actual work assignments and projects may vary, depending on office priorities. Students participating in the above work will be exposed to a wide range of test methods (AASHTO, ASTM, BSI British standards, CSA and MTO), as well as leading edge, state-of-the-art testing equipment and practice concepts relating to the provincial highway infrastructure construction industry.
 
The laboratory environment may include dust, fumes and noise, controlled within the limits set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.  Personal protective equipment will be provided by the ministry as required. Students must supply their own safety boots.  Occasional lifting of heavy materials is also expected.
 
In addition, MTO has specific health and safety protocols that must be followed when working in the workplace.  Such protocols will be communicated to the successful applicant.

Job Requirements: Qualifications:
  • Full time engineering students are eligible to apply for this position.
  • Well-developed computer skills with the ability to work with Excel spreadsheets, MS-Word, and MS PowerPoint are a must.
  • The student should possess good interpersonal, organization, communication, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with MS Access and knowledge of macro programming in Excel and Python is an asset.
  • Understanding of materials engineering and highway construction practices would be beneficial.
  • Laboratory experience is desirable, but not necessary.
